Sustainable Development Goals in Fashion & Space SDG 5: Gender Equality

Via UN India

For 17 days, we will be sharing a glimpse into how the fashion and space industries engage with each of the 17 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) put forward by the United Nations.

In this fifth of the series, we examine goal number 5: Gender Equality

Women are disproportionately impacted by exploitative practices in the fashion industry. This goes for garment workers suffering dangerous and inhumane labor conditions around the world to young models who are indebted by agents promising an elusive life-changing payday. There is also a well-documented deficit of female employees in STEM careers which drive and influence the design of so many systems and services we use to navigate the world. A common thread in the positive impact across the SDGs is the connectivity that satellites provide. This access to information, communication, and financial services support every one of the SDGs, including Gender Equality.

While these lists aren’t comprehensive, the goal is to demonstrate the potential impact through shared efforts between the two industries, in addition to their potential impact independently. We would love to hear from you in the comments about other areas or opportunities you see or are working on.
